October 30.
The whaling season is drawing to a
close, at the end of October the whales
generally take off, so that in another
week or so the boats will be hauled up.
Notwithstanding the adverse weather
experienced at the beginning of the
season, the cut has been an exceptionally
good one, twenty-four whales having
been taken, which will turn out between
70 tons and 80 tons of oil. The luck,
too, has been pretty evenly divided
among the companies. No. 1 got seven
whales, Nos. 2 and 3, who were mated,
got ten and a calf, and No. 4, the newest
and smallest company, six whales. As
most of the families on the island de-
pend principally on the fruits of this in-
dustry, the result is most satisfactory.
The island schooner Alice May leaves
this afternoon for Sydney with her
second cargo of oil, the whole of the
season's catch having been bought or
contracted for by Messrs. Hordern Bros.,
Sydney, who have set up a large store
on the island. Our old trader, Captain
Garth, has commenced running again in
a clipper schooner called the Aladdin,
but the Horderns, I am afraid, will be
too strong for him. Brisbane Courier 3 Sept 1896Aladdin, schooner, arrived at Sydney on Tuesday from Townsville. Brisbane Courier 22 March 1897The British schooner Aladdin is reported to have changed hands to Queensland owners. Brisbane Courier 30 March 1897The schooner Aladdin, of 101 tons, has

Outridge, of Thursday Island, for service in
connection with the Torres Straits pearl
fisheries.
